Passion for Swiss mountains in all their facets fires Mischa Crumbach’s passion for photography: Experiencing wild nature by mountain bike or on foot, enjoying peace and solitude far away from civilization, but above all discovering something new – he is a ‘Strahler’, searching for minerals hidden in the rocks. In his project “Design by Earth” he does not capture the elements of the mountain world that are obvious to all of us, but makes visible deeply hidden structures whose aesthetics are little known: the forms and colours of the minerals in the millimetre range, the contemplation of which fires our imagination.

Computer or nature? Who’s still sure he can tell the difference? Do we still want to be able to distinguish it?

We are already used to being able to produce almost realistic images of reality with computers. But the fact that the earth produces structures that one would expect from a computer is a surprise to many. But take a look at the presented motifs – is the Earth itself a gigantic computer, as in Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”? How would the term reality define itself then?

The pictures show the minerals as they have grown naturally, in the colours in which they appear in sunlight. Mischa Crumbach himself found some of them in the Valais mountains. His central creative element is the lighting, especially the play with light and shadow and the “taming” of the sometimes extremely strongly reflecting crystal surfaces.
